Congratulations to the Mahtomedi Varsity Esports Team who brought home three championships at the Minnesota Varsity League (MNVL) State Finals last weekend! The tournament was held in St. Cloud March 1st and 2nd, where over 1,000 students from over 50 Minnesota schools participated.

After two action-packed days, our Zephyrs took home first place in three events:

Chess: Noah House (Class of 2025)

Mario Kart 8: Bodhi Ziemann (Class of 2025) and Malachi Lim (Class of 2026)
Minecraft: Jackson Stout (Class of 2026), Taelin Richmond (Class of 2026), Malachi Lim, and Bodhi Ziemann

Taelin Richmond was also one of two students from the entire league chosen for the William Merida Inclusivity Award. The League Director Jake Utities shared that this award is granted to students who "promote inclusivity and are model leaders of esports in Minnesota." Taelin was selected from hundreds of players for his kindness and helpfulness to other players throughout the season.

Zephyrs also placed in the Top 8 (Jerrick Brown, Class of 2026), Top 12 (Evan Northrup, Class of 2026 and Isaac Tilsen, Class of 2025), and Top 16 (Jackson Stout and Ethan Stout, Class of 2027) in Chess. A parent volunteer who attended the tournament shared how proud our community is of these students and their hard work: “They have elevated Mahtomedi Public School’s esports program, and we now have a reputation of being one of the best teams in the state.”

Esports is an MHS varsity-level student-led program, advised by MHS Math Teacher Mike Isola. Mahtomedi Community Education supports the team and is proud to help ensure opportunities like these exist for our students to explore and excel in their unique interests.
